Patagonia's Fear

Nowadays we are living with a virus that not everybody knows about, it is called Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, or HPS. It causes more than one hundred and fifty thousand cases a year and it is caused by rats.
This disease can be extremely dangerous and deadly. It has an incubation time of two weeks before symptoms occur. The symptoms include tachycardia and tachypnea (rapid breathing), fever, headaches and muscle aches, vomiting, diarrhea or abdominal pain. You may also develop difficulty breathing. Having this condition can lead you to a cardiopulmonary phase that will requiere hospitalisation.
However, i must say that there is good news! There are simple things you can do to prevent having rats around and so prevent infection.
  • Keep your house clean.
  • Repair cracks and holes.
  • ventilate closed houses and barns by opening doors and windows.
  • Clear bushes, grass and junk around.
I am living in El Bolsón and the paradox of living in such a wonderful place surrounded by nature, is that one must take certain precautions to be able to enjoy it in spite of the risk that this virus implides.
